About DrumWise

DrumWise is a drum tuition company that was started in 2004 that offers private one-to-one and shared drum tuition at the DrumWise studio and in schools throughout Kent for all ages and abilities. To date, our youngest student started lessons aged 4 and our oldest is still drumming at 92!

The content of lessons is tailored to the individual's requirements which includes following the DrumWise syllabus, learning different styles of drumming, improving technique and working towards Rockschool graded exams.

Our tutors are highly experienced teachers and players that are fully CRB/DBS checked and offer advice to students about everything related to drumming. Our unique DrumWise syllabus includes worksheets and song transcriptions which are available for free to all DrumWise students through our password-protected Student Area

The DrumWise studio in Otham, near Maidstone, is a purpose built, sound-proofed, air conditioned drum studio that is the best teaching facility in the area, with a waiting area with free WiFi. Subject to availability, lessons are given 7 days a week and throughout the school holidays; please see our Booking Page for current availability.

DrumWise teaches at primary & secondary schools throughout Kent and can help with preparing and recording students' GCSE Music solo and ensemble pieces. A drum kit or percussion instruments can be leant to a school that wishes to have drum lessons but does not currently have the equipment. To arrange a free drum demonstration at your school or for more information visit our Schools Page

The Drumwise Teachers

Tom O. Mitchell

Tom O. Mitchell

Director

Tom has been teaching drums professionally for over 10 years and playing for 15 years. He studied Popular Music at West Kent College in Tonbridge before going on to tutor a handful of private students under the name of T.O.M Drum Tuition.

He started his professional teaching career with Kent Music School in 2003, going into schools around the county to tutor pupils during school hours.

Meanwhile, the number of private students kept growing so Tom decided it was time to step up the content of the lessons by writing a unique syllabus and coming up with a name for it. DrumWise has been going strong ever since - with around 60 students a week and a 100% exam pass rate.

Tom plays for several bands including tribute band Purple Zeppelin and soul duo McCrei.

Nikki Smith

Nikki Smith

Nikki has been playing drums for around 9 years and studied music performance at West Kent College and also completed a foundation degree through the University of Kent.

She has performed at many great festivals and venues including the Barfly in Camden and The French Quarter Festival in New Orleans.

At the moment she plays for a popular function band in Kent who play modern and classic chart music at pubs, clubs, parties and weddings all over the South East (www.talkthattalkfunctionband.co.uk).

As well as being a member of the DrumWise team Nikki is also a lecturer at West Kent College.

Matt Jenkins

Matt Jenkins

Matt started drumming at the age of 12 and studied drum kit at Yamaha Music School, Canterbury, where he worked through the grade system. Excelling in each grade Matt decided to pursue the instrument and completed a foundation degree in Professional Musicianship at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM), graduating in the summer of 2012.

Since completing the course Matt has been in high demand. His main focus has been with originals band the ‘Narratones’ which has seen success in the form of slots on BBC radio and festival appearances alongside bands such as ‘Status Quo’ and ‘Dr and The Medics’.

Matt is our primary percussion specialist but also teaches drum kit around Canterbury and at our Faversham base.

Alan - Student from Ashford

Tom has the great knack of knowing the direction to go in to help you really advance. He will suggest doing songs from a whole range of genres that you may not be aware of, but that will help you with the relevant technique. I look forward to every lesson.
